Well, that went fast. The first quarter of 2023 blew by. Despite my return to the classroom demanding too much time, I was able to get some work done. Below is a quick update of what we did in Q1 and what we have planned for Q2.
What we did
I was able to publish three Travel Writing World podcasts last quarter, one with Pico Iyer, one with Joanna Penn, and one announcing my new project The Hill of the Skull (THOTS).
About THOTS: I got feedback from Reader 3 and Reader 4. I edited the document down to 7,100 words. I also spoke with a photographer via Zoom for sequencing feedback. I’m happy about the direction. Now I just need to pull things together. But, I’m going to postpone the launch of THOTS until September 2023. That gives me some space to breathe.
We published three Genius Loci newsletters and three Drifting newsletters.
I published an article on Off Assignment called “6:15 pm on the Hill of the Skull.”
What we will do
In Q2 of 2023, I hope to finalize THOTS. That means that I will need to get some maquettes made, just to see how everything looks and feels in physical form. At this stage, we’re paying more attention to the book’s design. I’ll be looking at fonts, font sizes, margins, sequencing, flow, everything. Basically, does the book work and feel good in the hand? I know I’m talk a lot about “feeling” when I speak about this book’s creation, but sometimes art projects rely on intuition and sensation more than reason and logic.
I’ll probably call more book binderies and printers to get more quotes and work on the math of the campaign.
I also have some more interviews lined up for the Travel Writing World podcast, but a trip to Italy in May and a visit from the in-laws will slow work down undoubtedly.
I will be recording some behind-the-scenes videos and uploading them to YouTube in the coming weeks. More on this later.
Basically, there is a lot going on.
How about you?
How was your Q1/2023? Did you get any wins?
What do you have lined up for Q2/2023?
Have a nice spring!
Until July,
Jeremy
